Comcast Reacts To Social Media

Another example of the power of social media.

After I went on Twitter with my dispute with Comcast (see previous blog post) I quickly heard from @ComcastWill and someone from Comcast corporate called me this morning.  He admitted their website was wrong about what was included in my package and there was conflicting information among their sales staff.  So, he found a "creative solution" and the On Demand channels are now on my TV.  Thank you.

The bigger problem, of course, is "just say no" culture of Comcast's front line customer service.

The assumption seems to be, the customer can't possibly be right and even if they are, there's nothing we can or will do about it. I spent hours on the phone talking with people who were unfailingly polite, but incapable of accomplishing anything.  (I'm talking about billing and account issues here, not tech support, which I've found reasonably responsive over the years.)

Just put the customer on hold.

During the process I become convinced "let me check on that" means putting the customer on long periods of hold in the hope they will simply hang up, go away and start all over again with someone else tomorrow.

Customer service Supervisors are a myth.

Comcast must put the fear of God into any customer service rep about escalating the issue to a higher level.
There was never a "supervisor" available and in one case I was told "his answer is going to be the same as mine anyway."

Empowerment solves problems, but frustration rules.

The reality is, people hate cable companies more for the lack of customer care than the cost of the service.
Yes, I know managing large scale customer service is an enormous and expensive challenge and many customers call with bogus issues and complaints.  However, empowering the first person a customer speaks with to actually solve a problem, or at least get you quickly to someone who can, will make it a whole lot less likely that your customers will spend time on the internet looking at your competition while they're on hold.

Comcast, Why Is It Never Easy?

I've asked Comcast to fix a little problem with my service.  I think the email is fairly easy to understand.  Let's see what happens.

Cam's Cayenne Beer & Bacon Nuts

You could start with the fact that one of the ingredients in this mix is the worlds most perfect food, but when you add in the rest…WHAM-BAM!

3 to 4 Cups – Your favorite variety of Mixed Nuts

1 Cup – Brown Sugar

6 Slices – Bacon, uncooked and chopped into more or less ¼ inch square pieces

1 Tbsp – Salt

1 Tsp – Cayenne Pepper

1/3 Cup – Beer.  Drink the rest.  It’ll make the rest of the cooking process even better.

Bring the Beer, Sugar, Salt, Pepper and Bacon to a boil in a pot for eight minutes.  That’s just long enough to evaporate the alcohol from the beer.

Toss in the Mixed Nuts, stir until well coated then spread on a baking sheet.

Bake for ten minutes at 350-degrees, much longer than that and the nuts will be burned

Spread out onto another baking pan or flat surface to cool.  Sprinkle on some additional salt if you want.

Serve’m up...

(Oh, and on the unlikely chance there’s some left, I’d just toss it. You don’t want to store it away on a shelf with the bacon in it.)

The package toss seen 'round the world

Call it the perfect confluence of events to cause a really bad day at one of America's most image conscious companies.  The ingredients; a good home surveillance camera, the Christmas package delivery season, a bonehead FedEx driver and YouTube.  Combine them, with the suspicion many already have about how their packages are really handled and you get an instant viral video hit.

So, how do you fix something like this? FedEx embraced the problem... well, maybe embraced is not the right word... more like stood up and took ownership of it. Company execs went to the customer’s home somewhere in southern California with a personal apology...and a new computer monitor. They somehow reached an understanding that "customer doesn't want to be identified," then they turned to social media, too.

The company used its own blog and YouTube channel to issue a very public apology and say "this is not who we are."

About the only spin they could put on it was to say the video will be used as a "teaching tool." No doubt an object lesson in what not to do in a world where cameras are everywhere and what goes on line lives there forever.

Oh, and that driver, FedEx will only say he is no longer working with customers and is facing disciplinary action which can range from a note in his file to termination. I'm guessing the note in his file will read "do not rehire."

It looks like FedEx communications handled this exactly right, although I'm sure it must have been very tempting to point reporters to video of a UPS driver making a "special delivery" too.

Rigatoni Focaccia

Rigatoni Focaccia

 Ingredients:

3 sprigs rosemary

1 clove garlic, smashed and peeled

8oz of panchetta chopped into quater inch squares

splash of dry white wine

4 plum tomatoes, chopped

1 cup heavy cream

1 Tbsp unsalted butter

1/2 bup freshly grated parmigiano

2 Tbsp minced parsley

freshly ground black pepper

This is one of our favorite pasta recipes from Chef Silvano Marchetto at Da Silvano Restaurant in Greenwich Village, New York City.

Preparation:

Bring large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the rigatoni to the pot and cook until al dente, about 8-10 minutes.

While the pasta is cooking, chop sage, rosemary and garlic together into a thick paste.  Set aside.

Warm a large saute' pan to medium heat, add pancetta and cook until some fat has rendered and it begins to brown and crisp, about 6 minutes.

Add sage/rosemary/garlic mixture, stir and cook for 2 minutes.

Add a splash of white wine, cook 15 seconds.

Add the tomatoes, stir, and cook 2-3 minutes.

Add the cream and butter and stir to incorporate.

Drain the rigatoni when they have cooked al dente.  Add them to the pan with the sauce.

Add cheese, parsley, and season with black pepper.

Serve immediately, if not sooner.
